Today’s power plants do not have to look like you expect them to. Obviously, the large plants are harder to “transfigure”. The Wall Street Journal had an interesting article a few years ago on how “creative” plant appearances can be for natural gas fired plants of sizes up to 500 MWe. But, smaller distributed generation can be even easier to convert to esthetically pleasing appearances, coming in many seemingly common shapes and sizes.
Plants under 50 MWe size can often be contained in one building and made to look like a large barn or a “typical” light industrial or even commercial building. The “barn” look often works with exhaust stacks made to look like grain “silos”.
Sound abatement is often possible by “double enclosing” the plant. A simple “pole barn” design is enclosed in a second, outer building that can take the appearance of a more suitable building that blends into the area. The use of sound deadening materials and double doors goes a long way to concealing the plants true purpose.
