The Green Energy Guru

Power To the People!

That might have been a militant chant in the 60s, but it has a much different meaning today! Today, it acknowledges the ability of people to make a difference in their own electric power needs!

Today, we have vastly improved distributed generation opportuniites. Relatively small generation equipment can make a big difference for many industrial and commercial electric power users. In fact, with the growth of “Net Metering” programs in many areas of the country, the economics of self generation even work for the residential user!

Is the day of utility supplied electric power over? Of course not. But, the game has improved. The “People” can generate much of their own electric power and capture the benefits from cost savings of high efficiency, high power quality, and higher power reliability! Some applications can even use green renewable sources. It doesn’t get much better than that!

The time is at hand. Let Rudd Asset Management show you how.

Green + Efficiency = Win/Win

Green renewable power demand is growing. But, when green renewable sources are combined with a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) designs, the value is greatly enhanced!

While a typical coal fired power plant might have a thermal efficiency of ~ 35 %, a CHP plant can easily reach 70 % efficiency (www.energypulse.net, 10/16/07)! But, when the design uses the exhaust heat of the engine or turbine, that efficiency can exceed 80 % + with little trouble!

CHP technology is proven and readily available. Matching green renewable power with cogeneration designs (CHP), makes good sense; dollars and cents!

Contact Rudd Asset Management to discuss how green renewable power with CHP can be designed for your projects.

Is the King Dead?

The thought makes me think about the words of Mark Twain when he said … “the reports of my death are greatly exaggerated!” Somewhat humorous perhaps, but appropriate. It is much the same with king coal. No. The king is not dead, but it is a sobering thought!

With the recent report that American Electric Power has agreed under legal settlement to pay billions of dollars to clean up a number of their existing coal plants, it’s clear that coal will be challenged. The costs advantages of coal are changing.

The king is not dead. But, the playing field has been leveled a little bit for green renewable generation. When the total cost is tallied, the cost of green renewable power is getting more and more competitive! In fact, the advantages are starting to stand out!

When the increased efficiency of cogeneration is factored into the mix, the balance begins to tip towards the benefits of green renewable power. When the benefits of distributed generation and the avoidance of transmission costs is added, the advantages become even more apparent.

But, this is only the beginning. When carbon tax costs and green house gas costs become effective, the change will become clear. Those changes will occur. Change is coming!

King coal is not dead. But, it is challenged. The global energy industry is entering a period of rapid change. Green renewable power will play a larger and larger part in the global economy.  There may soon be a new king.

The Cure for NIMBY?

A remarkable thing is beginning to happen in the green power industry. The aversion to building power plants in a person’s “own backyard” is declining! (Most Americans Support Building Power Plants … www.energycentral.com) Could the old complaint, Not In My Back Yard (i.e. NIMBY) be waning?

Per a recent survey by  The Saint Consulting Group, “… Thirty-eight percent of American adults support a local power plant project, compared to just 23 percent in 2006 – a 15 % rise (a 65 % increase in one year!).  Though not conclusive, two factors may be having a profound effect, green renewable power and distributed generation.

Green renewable power is becoming more and more sought after throughout America. The need for electric power does not have to be in opposition to doing something to reduce global warming if green renewable power sources are used.

Distributed generation is the industry trend to build smaller power sources, closer to the end user. The use of highly efficient, small units is meeting less public resistance. Site sizes tend to be smaller. Buildings are less imposing; sometimes even able to be built to resemble ordinary, common buildings in the area. Double enclosure techiniques can greatly reduce plant noise. Plant emissions can be greatly reduced.

Are we ready to put a power plant in every neighhorhood? No. But, are we finding ways to make power plants more and more acceptable to the community. The answer is a definite ….. maybe.

There is more work to be done. But, progress has been made!

Shortage of Renewable Energy is coming!

Demand for green renewable power is growing. In fact, it is outpacing the increase in supply. By 2010, clean energy demand will outpace generation by at least 37 % unless a rush of new generation is built. (National Renewable Energy Lab)

What can you do? Call your utility. Ask them what they are doing to develop new green renewable power supplies. Call your State regulatory offices. Call your Local, State and Federal representatives. The time to avert this shortage is now!

We need to take the next step to breaking our dependence on foreign sources of energy. We need to make a difference in global warming. It all starts with a call.

Where is your State?

A lot of attention has been focused on states like Pennsylvania for their aggressive efforts in “clean energy” development. The potential to spend 850 million dollars on clean energy projects has the State thinking. (www.energycentral.com) Where is your State?

Developing  green renewable power takes effort. What green renewable sources exist in your area? Which make the most sense for you? Green renewable power is no longer limited to wind, solar, or hydro choices. Biomass and “waste to fuel” choices exist. We can use materials that we cast aside to energize our lives! We can take potentially dangerous materials in landfills,  tires, or other undesirable materials and make clean energy!

Call you Local, State and Federal representatives. Make green renewable power a reality in your area! Be part of the solution of this national problem! Get involved!

Renewable Portfolio Standards are growing!

As of April 2007, 23 States have established Renewable Portfolio Standards or goals. (Energy Efficiency & Renewable Energy report, DOE)

Why not all 50? Green renewable power sources are needed in all 50 States! Each of us needs to ask our State government if we have an RPS. If not, why not and when!

Green Renewable Power use is growing!

Total renewable energy consumption increased 7 % between 2005 and 2006, while at the same time total US energy consumption was down 1 %!  This was basically caused by decreased use of fossil fuels like coal and natural gas! (Energy Information Administration)

Renewable green power is available and cost effective!  When we consider the “total cost” of fossil fuels, we cannot afford not to use green renewables!
